6 June 1944. The Allied invasion fleet crosses the Channel.
Where will you land, and when will you break out? Command the Western Front a week at a time, from the Normandy beaches across the Rhine to Berlin.
The operation begins five weeks before D-Day
The Allies prepare their coast among Normandy, the Pas-de-Calais, east of the Seine, Brittany, Holland and Provence, turn the Germans' eyes to another coast with a phantom build-up, bomb the railways and arm the Resistance. The Germans lay obstacles and mines, move coast divisions and photograph England's ports to read where the Allies will come. Ultra decrypts let the Allies read what the Germans believe, and the better the deception works, the longer the Germans stay pinned to the wrong coast. Neither side learns what the other chose until the morning of the landing.
Wars are won in the ports
Allied supplies come in only through the landing beaches and ports. The Germans wreck every port before they give it up, and the farther the front runs from the docks, the shorter the fuel and shells. When to take Cherbourg and Antwerp, and which army group gets the fuel, decides the war.
The sky belongs to the Allies
German units moving by day are caught by Allied fighter-bombers; moving by night, they cover only one region a week. The weather opens and closes the sky, and a week of rain and fog is the time to strike back.
The Führer's trust and the commander's judgment
Mortain, the destruction of Paris, the Ardennes. Playing the Germans, you decide whether to obey the Führer's directives or defy them to save the army. Lose his trust and the Commander-in-Chief West is replaced.
From the bocage to Berlin
The hedgerow battles, the Cobra breakout and the Falaise Pocket, the liberation of Paris, Market Garden and the Scheldt, the winter in the Ardennes, the bridge at Remagen, the Ruhr Pocket. In the east the Soviets close on Berlin: halt on the Elbe, or race them to the capital? Historical events are opportunities that open when the conditions are right, and your choices may mean they never happen.
Tank quality and the replacement crisis
The gap between Shermans and Panthers or Tigers, the Allied rifleman shortage of the autumn, and the German recovery known as the Miracle of the West are all part of the war.
The war council
Your staff propose different operations for breakthroughs and withdrawals, reinforcements and landings. Weigh their reasons and risks, then accept or reject them. As the front widens, you can hand the northern, central or southern front to the staff.
Expert mode
Assign units by division and field tanks and guns by model. Raise Volksgrenadier divisions or new French divisions in liberated France, and follow the record and honors each unit earns.
