Bryant Darwyn is a calligrapher, educator, and designer based in Portland, Oregon, whose work sits at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary lettering. He discovered calligraphy in his mid-twenties while working as a graphic designer, when a client requested hand-lettered signage that his digital tools could not convincingly replicate. What began as a practical necessity became a lifelong passion.
Over the past fifteen years, Bryant has developed a teaching approach rooted in the belief that beautiful lettering is built from simple, repeatable fundamentals. His workshops and online courses have introduced thousands of students to modern calligraphy, from complete beginners who have never held a brush pen to experienced letterers seeking to refine their technique. He is known for breaking down complex skills into clear, manageable steps and for his patient, encouraging teaching style.
Bryant's commercial work includes custom lettering for brands such as Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Powell's Books, and the Portland Japanese Garden, as well as wedding invitations for clients across the United States and internationally. His lettering has appeared in *Uppercase* magazine, *Communication Arts*, and several juried exhibitions of contemporary calligraphy.
When not lettering or teaching, Bryant can be found hiking the Columbia River Gorge with his rescue dog, Scout, experimenting with sourdough bread, or collecting vintage sign-painting manuals. He lives in a small Craftsman bungalow in Northeast Portland with an ever-growing collection of ink bottles and too many notebooks.
