About this ebook

With a new introduction from Anne Tyler.

From one our most treasured American writers, Delta Wedding is a vivid and charming portrait of a large southern family, the Fairchilds, who live on a plantation in the Mississippi delta.

The story, set in 1923, is exquisitely woven from the ordinary events of family life, centered around the visit of a young relative, Laura McRaven, and the family’s preparations for her cousin Dabney’s wedding.

Welty places the young visitor amid the bustling preparations at Shellmound, where seventeen-year-old Dabney startles her kin by choosing Troy Flavin, the plantation overseer from the hills.

The novel follows the adored uncle George through family dinners and sudden alarms on the railway trestle, charting his place within an expansive household of watchful aunts and boisterous cousins.

Through these domestic gatherings, the narrative evokes the texture of the Yazoo Delta, from the shimmering cotton fields to the music drifting over James’s Bayou.

  • Multiple POV: The narrative shifts among the interior lives of the observant mother Ellen, the independent bride Dabney, and the defensive outsider Robbie Reid as each confronts what family demands.
  • Coming of Age: Nine-year-old Laura McRaven seeks a place in the clan after her mother’s death, discovering the solitary griefs and quiet resilience that exist beneath the cousins’ boisterous games.
  • Small Town Setting: Beyond the big house, life along the Yazoo River revolves around storekeeper gossip, the whistle of the Yellow Dog train, and the ghost stories whispering from the cypress swamp.
  • Also by This Author: The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty, The Ponder Heart and The Robber Bridegroom.
